NFL COACHING EXPERIENCE

Pat’s Take: The Bears certainly love local talent: Cole Kmet, TJ Edwards, Doug Kramer. Ryan Poles has had a soft spot for signing players that grew up Bears fans. Why not Wheaton, Ill. native Todd Monken for head coach?

Monken’s been a head coach once before: From 2013-2015 at Southern Mississippi. In his first season, the Golden Eagles finished 1-11. Two years later, Monken led Southern Miss to a 9-5 record and an appearance in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Monken skipped town for the NFL, where he’d bounce around as an OC before winning two national titles back in the college game with Georgia in 2022 and 2023.

At 58, Monken’s hardly a shoe-in for a top job in the league despite his success with Lamar Jackson. However, if Monken were 15-20 years younger, I think he’d be neck-and-neck as the top candidate in the cycle. His offense’s are innovative and tailored extremely well to the talent at his disposal. Then again, having Lamar Jackson makes just about anybody look good.

I think Monken would be a terrific hire for Chicago and might make the perfect backup should the Bears wait for Ben Johnson to become available and end up spurned. A homecoming for the Baltimore OC would set Caleb Williams up with a top quarterbacking mind and a leader of men as the second-year quarterback enters a crucial stretch in his development.
